About Us

The Research Division in the Ministry of Health was established in 1988 and is mandated to coordinate health research in Malawi. The Division aims at generating quality information and making it accessible to all intended users for evidence-based decision making, through standardized and harmonized tools across all programs. The goal is to improve capacity to conduct research and promote utilization of research findings for evidence-informed decision-making in practice and policy formulation.

To promote and coordinate the conduct of health research through resource mobilization, capacity building and adherence to research ethics, in order to generate high quality evidence required to effectively inform the development of health and related policies and interventions for the attainment of the well-being of Malawians.


The Department derives its mandate from the National Health Research Policy (2019) and the Public Health Act (1948) as amended. Its mandate is “To promote and coordinate health research in the country.”
